Oscars 2010 are special and interesting in many ways. This time there are 10 nominations in Best Picture category which includes two science fiction (Avatar and District9) and one animated (Up). Top nomination earners are Avatar and The Hurt Locker with both having 9 nominations. There are only few hours left to the ceremony and this is my prediction on 82nd Academy Awards.
Best Movie:
Avatar
Avatar as every movie geek knows is a James Cameron 3D movie after his box office success Titanic. But why this should be given the honor over movies like The Hurt Locker or The Blind Side? It also lacks good script. The answer is its technology and the movie making techniques that Cameron has pioneered though this movie. Movie is a film watching experience of a lifetime and thus should be awarded with this prestigious award.
Best Director:
Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker)
This award is interesting because it’s going to be a close count between James Cameron and his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow. But my vote goes to ex-Mrs. Cameron for her amazing Direction in Hurt Locker. Though I’m an Avatar freak I must say that the way Kathryn handled this movie was outstanding. She left no room for complaints. That’s why I think she deserves to be the first lady director o win the Academy Award.
Best Adopted Screenplay:
District 9
If you compare these both movies (though its hard) they both have amazing screenplay. D9 is fast and exciting where Up in the air is smooth but interesting. But concept-wise D9 should be the winner. D9 was adopted from its own director Blomkamp's short film Alive at Jo'Berg.
Best Original Screenplay:
Quentin Tarantino (Inglorious Basterds )
This one is sure. Not just because I’m a die-hard Tarantino fan but because of his character development in this masterpiece. Bastards is fast paced and most importantly beautifully flawed story with characters that you won’t forget for a long time. Though not a best movie of 2009, it sure is best original screenplay.
Best Actor:
Jeff Bridge as Bad Blake (Crazy Heart)
Watching a musical movie is always a fun. But giving such a great performance is not so common. I remember “Walk the line” where Jaquin Pheonix was nominated for Best Actor in 2005 Academy Awards. Jeff Bridge’s performance as Otis “Bad” Blake reminds you of this but its far more natural.
Best Actress:
Sandra Bullock as Leigh Anne Tuohy (The Blind Side)
The Blind Side was most touching movie I have seen in 2009. The main credit goes to Sandra Bullock. She was simple and subtle but leaves a strong impression on you that good people still exist in world. Sandra Bullock's performance in The Blind Side is remarkable. It’s not a directorial masterpiece but deserves Best Actress Award.
Best Supporting Actor:
Christoph Waltz as Col. Landa (Inglorious Bastards)
That’s what a call a sophisticated villain. Col. Hans Landa was the best character written in Inglorious Bastards and Christoph Waltz gave a splendid performance. The "Kaminapan" in his face is sufficient for an Oscar. Last year Late Heath Ledger gave his performance of a lifetime as a psychopathic villain in The Dark Knight. But this year’s real badass performance is by Christoph waltz and im 100% sure for this one to win.
